ABOUT
Five for Nothing is a collection of poems that has emerged from my struggle to find language suitable to communicate experience. It is a document of my past as it is informed by the present and a testament to tenacity and persistence in the aftermath of trauma and loss.
PRAISE FOR FEVER COAT
“Like the Goddess of war and wisdom sprung from her father’s head, Cindy King has the power and poise of Athena. Fever Coat is reckless but not heedless, whip smart but not slick. It takes risks including the greatest risk of being funny while also being piercing, devastating. It’s a romp and a sob in the street. She is someone who has an intimate acquaintance with sorrow and pain and persistence. There’s a “grimace behind (her) grin”. Her critical, cold eye on American culture “Where everything, even butterflies, like cats and cattle, is belled” is clinical and caustic. I find the range and awareness – she misses nothing – to be extraordinary. This book will take you to school to learn about tenderness and retribution and a kind of revolution of feeling that would otherwise be amorphous or corrosive. ‘There’s a lesson here,’ as she says and it’s about how King’s skill and transformative powers can make a compelling work of art.”

“Cindy King’s Fever Coat has the delirious patina of a quantum nocturne troubled by personification, by what it means to be a person and how the world tries to unperson us. These poems are Cubist elegies beset by nightmares of transit where the Unicorn Tapestry erupts from the fabric, sketches of the mythological transformations that happen when we finally can decode the thin script of the dead languages of houseplants and read the star charts in the weak slant of the night refrigerator light.”
